Read widely, for pleasure, but also to pay attention to language, to the rhythm of words and sentences, to the way a story works. Think about beginnings and endings. Write for yourself; keep a journal or notebook so you can write often, and easily, without worrying about making mistakes. Notice the world around you. Listen. Write down thoughts and feelings and ideas, and the things you see, hear and touch. Draw and doodle in your notebook. Play. Practise. It can take a long time to get a story right. Don't rush it. Let it take the time it needs. Edit and rewrite it until it’s the best you can make it. Talk to other people who write. Believe in your story.
